Pet Joint Health: Mussels, Omega-3s, and Joint Supplements
A dog who hesitates before climbing stairs or a cat who quietly stops using a favourite shelf may be experiencing joint pain. Owners often respond by buying a supplement labelled “mobility,” “hip and joint,” or “cartilage support.”
The shelf can contain green-lipped mussel, fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, turmeric, methylsulfonylmethane, hyaluronic acid, herbs, or many ingredients combined in one chew.
These products are not equal. “Natural” does not prove that a supplement works, and a visible improvement does not identify which ingredient caused it. Joint health starts with diagnosis, healthy body condition, suitable movement, environmental support, and effective pain control. A supplement may be one part of that plan.
What osteoarthritis is
Osteoarthritis is a disorder of the whole joint. Cartilage changes, bone remodels, the joint lining may become inflamed, muscles weaken, and pain alters movement. It can follow age, injury, developmental disease, instability, abnormal joint shape, excess body weight, or repeated stress.
It is generally managed rather than cured.
A pet can have joint pain without dramatic limping. Cats in particular may reduce activity gradually and hide discomfort.
Possible signs in dogs
- stiffness after rest;
- slower rising;
- hesitation on stairs or before jumping;
- shortened walks or stopping more often;
- lagging behind;
- limping or shifting weight;
- difficulty entering a car;
- reduced play;
- licking around a joint;
- irritability when touched or moved;
- slipping on smooth floors;
- loss of thigh or shoulder muscle.
Possible signs in cats
- jumping to lower surfaces or using intermediate steps;
- pulling up with the front legs rather than jumping cleanly;
- sleeping in easier-to-reach places;
- reduced grooming, especially over the back and hips;
- missing the litter tray or struggling with a high entry;
- reluctance to use stairs;
- less play or exploration;
- irritability when lifted;
- overgrown claws;
- matted coat;
- toileting beside the tray;
- appearing “old” or withdrawn.
A change in movement is not automatically arthritis. Nail injuries, fractures, spinal disease, neurological problems, muscle injury, infection, cancer, paw pain, and other conditions can look similar.
Diagnosis comes before the supplement shelf
A veterinarian may use:
- history and home videos;
- gait and posture observation;
- joint, muscle, paw, and neurological examination;
- assessment of body condition and muscle condition;
- radiographs;
- blood or urine testing before certain medicines;
- joint-fluid testing or advanced imaging in selected cases;
- response to an appropriate treatment plan.
Radiographic changes and pain do not always match perfectly. A mildly changed image can accompany meaningful pain, while an abnormal-looking joint may not explain every symptom. The examination and the pet's function matter.
Seek prompt care for sudden inability to bear weight, severe pain, a swollen or hot joint, trauma, collapse, dragging limbs, fever, or rapid deterioration.
The foundations do more work than most supplements
Maintain a lean body condition
Excess body weight adds mechanical load and may contribute to inflammatory processes. Even a modest reduction can make movement easier for an overweight animal.
Weight loss must preserve muscle. Ask the veterinary team for a calorie target, measured portions, suitable protein intake, treat allowance, and monitoring schedule. Do not simply feed much less of an unbalanced diet.
A supplement chew, oil, mussel powder, or treat also contributes calories. Count it.
Use regular, appropriate movement
Complete rest can worsen stiffness and muscle loss. Uncontrolled bursts can aggravate pain.
A useful plan may include:
- several shorter walks rather than one exhausting outing;
- steady lead walking;
- sniffing and gentle exploration;
- controlled sit-to-stand or weight-shifting exercises when prescribed;
- low-impact play;
- gradual strength and balance work;
- rehabilitation or hydrotherapy for suitable patients;
- rest and plan adjustment after a flare.
Exercise must match the diagnosis. Ball chasing, sharp turns, repeated jumping, slippery floors, stairs, or swimming are not appropriate for every condition.
Cats can move through short play sessions, food puzzles, low climbing routes, and strategically spaced resources. Do not force a painful cat to chase.
Make the home easier to navigate
Provide:
- nonslip rugs or runners;
- supportive bedding;
- steps or a stable ramp selected for the individual;
- low-entry litter trays;
- bowls and water on an easy route;
- traction near beds, doors, and feeding areas;
- trimmed nails and paw hair where appropriate;
- raised or lowered resources based on comfortable posture;
- barriers that prevent unsafe jumping or stairs.

Green-lipped mussel: what it is
New Zealand green-lipped mussel, Perna canaliculus, may appear as:
- dried whole mussel powder;
- stabilised powder;
- oil or lipid extract;
- an ingredient in a therapeutic diet;
- part of a multi-ingredient chew or capsule.
It contains marine fatty acids and other compounds proposed to influence inflammation. The amount and chemical profile can differ substantially with processing, storage, dose, and product formulation.
This means “contains mussel” is not enough information. A food with a decorative amount of mussel powder cannot be assumed equivalent to a studied extract.
Does green-lipped mussel work?
Some canine studies report improvement in pain or mobility. One randomised controlled trial found that more dogs receiving a green-lipped mussel preparation improved on several clinical measures than dogs receiving placebo. Other studies of enriched diets or combination products have also reported benefits.
The limitations matter:
- studies are often small;
- products and doses differ;
- some formulas contain several active ingredients;
- outcomes include owner ratings that can be influenced by expectation;
- results from one branded extract cannot automatically be transferred to another;
- feline evidence is much more limited;
- a response does not mean damaged cartilage has regrown.
The practical conclusion is promising but product-specific and not guaranteed. Green-lipped mussel can be discussed as an adjunct, especially when the veterinarian can identify a product with relevant evidence and a meaningful dose. It should not replace diagnosis or effective pain treatment.
Mussel safety questions
Tell the veterinarian before starting a mussel product if the pet:
- has reacted to shellfish or a marine ingredient;
- has a sensitive stomach;
- has pancreatitis or requires fat restriction;
- takes medicines that affect clotting;
- has a planned operation or dental procedure;
- is pregnant, nursing, very young, or medically complex;
- eats a therapeutic diet where additions need review.
Possible problems include digestive upset, refusal because of odour, added calories, contamination, oxidation of marine fats, or reaction to another ingredient in a combination product.
A known food allergy does not prove every supplement from the same broad source will cause a reaction, but it is a reason for veterinary review—not a home trial.
Do not feed raw mussels as arthritis treatment. Dose, balance, food safety, shells, salt, and contamination become uncontrolled.
Omega-3 fatty acids: the stronger supplement evidence
Long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids—particularly EPA and DHA—have the most consistent nutraceutical evidence for osteoarthritis pain among commonly marketed pet joint ingredients.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of canine and feline osteoarthritis supported omega-3-enriched therapeutic diets and omega-3 supplementation as adjuncts for pain management. Evidence is not perfect, and response still varies.
Fish oil is not an immediate painkiller. It may take time to assess, and it does not replace medication when pain is inadequately controlled.
Read EPA and DHA, not only “fish oil”
A capsule labelled “1,000 mg fish oil” does not necessarily provide 1,000 mg EPA plus DHA. The active fatty acids may be a much smaller amount.
Ask the veterinarian for a target based on:
- combined EPA and DHA;
- the pet's weight;
- diagnosis;
- current diet;
- medical conditions;
- other medicines and supplements.
Therapeutic joint diets may already contain substantial omega-3s. Adding more without calculating the total can increase calories and adverse effects.
Omega-3 safety
Potential concerns include:
- diarrhoea, vomiting, or oily stool;
- extra calories and weight gain;
- fishy odour or reduced acceptance;
- altered platelet function or bleeding risk at high intake;
- nutrient interactions;
- oxidation or rancidity;
- worsening of some gastrointestinal or fat-sensitive conditions.
Store the product as directed and discard it if smell, appearance, or packaging suggests deterioration. Do not use cod liver oil as a casual substitute; it may add vitamins A and D in amounts that complicate dosing.
Plant sources such as flax provide alpha-linolenic acid. Cats and dogs do not necessarily convert it efficiently into the same amounts of EPA and DHA supplied by marine or suitable algal sources.
Glucosamine and chondroitin: popular does not mean proven
Glucosamine and chondroitin are among the best-known joint ingredients. Marketing often says they support cartilage building blocks or protect joints.
Clinical pain relief is not reliably demonstrated. The veterinary meta-analysis cited above found a marked non-effect of glucosamine-chondroitin nutraceuticals for osteoarthritis pain and recommended against relying on them for analgesia.
That does not prove every animal can never appear to improve. It means the overall evidence does not support using these products in place of treatments with clearer benefit.
If an owner and veterinarian decide on a time-limited trial:
- choose one product rather than several at once;
- define the target change;
- keep other major variables stable where possible;
- use a consistent dose;
- reassess at an agreed date;
- stop if there is no meaningful improvement or an adverse effect occurs.
Do not continue indefinitely because “it might be maintaining the joint” when there is no objective way to show benefit and cost or calories are significant.
Collagen and undenatured type II collagen
Collagen products are not all the same. Hydrolysed collagen peptides, gelatin, and undenatured type II collagen have different proposed mechanisms and doses.
The same veterinary review found weak evidence for collagen-based nutraceuticals overall. Some individual studies are encouraging, but product-specific conclusions are difficult.
Do not calculate a pet dose from a human collagen drink or assume bone broth provides a studied therapeutic amount. Bone broth can also contain excessive fat, salt, onion, garlic, or unsafe bones.
MSM, turmeric, Boswellia, hyaluronic acid, and herbal blends
These ingredients appear in many combination products:
- methylsulfonylmethane or MSM;
- curcumin or turmeric extracts;
- Boswellia;
- hyaluronic acid;
- avocado-soybean unsaponifiables;
- eggshell membrane;
- plant extracts;
- proprietary marine or lipid blends.
Evidence in cats and dogs varies from preliminary to absent, and formulation matters. Curcumin, for example, has absorption challenges; the amount of kitchen turmeric is not equivalent to a studied extract.
Multi-ingredient products make cause and effect harder to judge. They also increase the chance of duplication and interaction.
“Proprietary blend” may hide the amount of each ingredient. If the dose is not disclosed, neither the owner nor veterinarian can compare it with research.
What about CBD?
Some studies report pain improvement with particular cannabinoid products, but quality, concentration, contaminants, legal status, drug interactions, sedation, gastrointestinal effects, and liver-enzyme changes require caution.
CBD is not interchangeable with cannabis or THC. THC can poison pets.
Do not use an unverified human edible, oil, or gummy. It may contain THC, xylitol, chocolate, or an inaccurate concentration. Discuss local law and a specific veterinary product with the veterinarian.
Supplements cannot replace pain relief
Osteoarthritis pain can reduce sleep, movement, toileting, grooming, social contact, and muscle strength. Leaving pain undertreated while trying supplements one after another is not a harmless natural approach.
A veterinary plan may include:
- an anti-inflammatory or other analgesic;
- condition-specific medication;
- weight management;
- therapeutic exercise or rehabilitation;
- home adaptation;
- joint injections or other procedures in selected cases;
- treatment of concurrent disease;
- supplements or therapeutic nutrition where appropriate;
- monitoring for response and adverse effects.
Cats must never receive a human painkiller without direct veterinary instruction. Paracetamol or acetaminophen can be fatal to cats, and ibuprofen, naproxen, and related human medicines can seriously poison cats and dogs.

How to choose a supplement more intelligently
Ask these questions:
What exact problem is it meant to address?
“Joint health” is vague. Is the goal reduced pain, better mobility, dietary omega-3 intake, or support during rehabilitation? A measurable goal helps judge value.
Is the ingredient amount disclosed?
Look for actual quantities per chew, capsule, scoop, or daily serving. For marine oils, look for EPA and DHA amounts.
Was this exact product studied?
Evidence for one extract, dose, or therapeutic diet does not validate every product using the ingredient name.
Is quality independently assessed?
Ask about manufacturing standards, batch testing, contaminants, oxidation, label accuracy, and whether the company provides veterinary technical information. A quality seal can address manufacturing questions but does not automatically prove clinical effectiveness.
Does it duplicate the diet or another supplement?
List every food, oil, chew, powder, treat, and medicine. Combination products can repeat omega-3, vitamins, minerals, glucosamine, or herbs.
Is it safe for this patient?
Kidney, liver, gastrointestinal, pancreatic, endocrine, clotting, allergy, and other conditions can change the decision. So can surgery and prescription medicines.
How will success be measured?
Decide before starting.
Run a fair home trial
Joint pain naturally fluctuates. Owners also expect a purchased product to help. Use a simple tracking plan.
Record a baseline for one or two weeks:
- time to rise;
- stair use;
- jump height;
- comfortable walking time;
- slipping;
- play;
- grooming;
- litter-tray use;
- sleep and restlessness;
- reaction to touch;
- rescue pain medication, if prescribed.
Take short videos in the same location and at a similar time of day. Use the same floor and activity. Do not deliberately provoke pain.
Start only one new intervention when medically reasonable. Reassess at the veterinarian's recommended interval. Compare function, not whether the pet seemed “brighter once.”
Stop and call for advice if vomiting, diarrhoea, appetite loss, unusual bruising or bleeding, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, or another concerning change occurs.
Do healthy young pets need joint supplements?
A breed predisposition or athletic activity does not automatically prove a lifelong supplement will prevent arthritis.
More reliable preventive priorities include:
- keeping the animal lean;
- feeding a complete and balanced growth diet;
- avoiding calcium or mineral improvisation in growing large-breed dogs;
- building fitness gradually;
- protecting puppies from repetitive forced impact;
- maintaining nails and traction;
- treating injuries properly;
- choosing suitable activity for conformation and health;
- screening when breed or family history indicates it.
A supplement cannot correct hip dysplasia, a torn ligament, unstable kneecap, elbow disease, or poor body condition.
Discuss timing of sterilisation, sport, and developmental screening individually rather than following supplement marketing.
Cats deserve active joint care too
Cat arthritis is often missed because cats do not need to walk on a lead and may not show a classic limp. A cat who no longer jumps may simply be labelled lazy or old.
Owners can help by:
- providing a low-entry litter tray;
- placing steps between the floor and favourite resting place;
- using nonslip surfaces;
- keeping food, water, rest, and toileting within comfortable routes;
- maintaining gentle daily play;
- tracking grooming and claw condition;
- obtaining veterinary pain assessment.
Do not hide an oral supplement in every meal if it causes the cat to avoid food. Reliable nutrition is more important than forcing an optional product.
A joint-support plan in order of priority
- Notice and record the change.
- Obtain a veterinary diagnosis.
- Treat pain adequately.
- Optimise body and muscle condition.
- Adapt exercise and the home.
- Review the complete diet.
- Add an evidence-informed supplement only when safe and useful.
- Measure response and stop ineffective products.
- Reassess as the condition changes.
The order prevents a supplement from becoming a substitute for care.
The practical takeaway
Green-lipped mussel is a plausible joint-support ingredient with some encouraging canine research, but effects are product-specific and not guaranteed. Long-chain omega-3s, particularly EPA and DHA, have stronger evidence as an adjunct for osteoarthritis. Collagen evidence is limited, while glucosamine-chondroitin has not shown reliable pain relief in higher-level veterinary analysis.
No supplement rebuilds a severely damaged joint or makes pain acceptable.
The most dependable joint-care plan combines early recognition, veterinary assessment, lean body condition, maintained muscle, suitable movement, an accessible home, and effective pain control. Supplements belong after those foundations—not in place of them.

Does green-lipped mussel cure arthritis in cats or dogs?
No. Some preparations may reduce discomfort or support mobility in some animals, but they do not rebuild a severely damaged joint or cure osteoarthritis. They should be considered an adjunct to a veterinarian-led plan.
Do glucosamine and chondroitin work for pet joint pain?
