Cats and dogs may share a home, a sofa, and an interest in each other's bowls, but they do not share the same nutritional biology. Dogs can use nutrients from a relatively broad mix of animal and plant ingredients when the finished diet is properly formulated. Cats are obligate carnivores: they evolved to depend on animal tissues for several nutrients their bodies cannot make in sufficient amounts.
Taurine is one of the most important examples. Cats must obtain it reliably from their diet. Most dogs can synthesize taurine from other sulfur-containing amino acids, although individual dogs can still become deficient under particular dietary or medical circumstances.
This does not mean a cat should live on plain meat or that any food containing meat is suitable for cats. Both species need complete and balanced nutrition for their life stage. The difference is that the feline formula must account for several special requirements that ordinary dog food, human food, or an improvised meat diet may not meet.
What does obligate carnivore mean?
An obligate carnivore is an animal whose metabolism depends on nutrients naturally obtained through eating other animals. Cats evolved around prey-based diets and retained metabolic pathways suited to a consistently high supply of animal protein and fat. They cannot adjust some of those pathways as flexibly as dogs or people can.
The Cornell Feline Health Center describes cats as obligate carnivores that rely on nutrients found in animal products. These nutrients include specific amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins—not simply "protein" as one number on a label.
Obligate carnivore does not mean that every plant ingredient is poisonous or useless to a cat. Properly formulated cat foods may contain grains, starches, fiber sources, or purified nutrients. What matters is whether the complete formula delivers all essential feline nutrients in digestible forms and appropriate amounts.
It also does not mean that plain chicken, tuna, beef, or liver is complete cat food. Meat alone can be severely low in calcium and may not provide the right balance of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids. A food can be animal-based and still be nutritionally inadequate.
Dogs are nutritionally more flexible—but still need balance
Domestic dogs are commonly described as omnivorous or carnivorous animals with significant dietary flexibility. They can digest and use nutrients from a wider range of ingredients than cats, including properly processed plant ingredients. Dogs can usually convert beta-carotene into vitamin A, convert linoleic acid toward arachidonic acid, and synthesize taurine from methionine and cysteine when the diet and metabolism support those pathways.
That flexibility is not permission to feed leftovers or an uncalculated homemade diet. Dogs still need essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, energy, and an appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus balance. Their needs change with growth, pregnancy, activity, body condition, age, and disease.
A dog can also have an adverse reaction to an ingredient that another dog handles well. The word "omnivore" does not make chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, xylitol, excess fat, cooked bones, or spoiled food safe.
Taurine: a small nutrient with major roles
Taurine is an amino-sulfonic acid often grouped with amino acids in nutrition discussions. It is present in animal tissues, especially in organs and muscle, and contributes to several essential body functions.
Cats use taurine for:
- normal heart muscle function;
- retinal structure and vision;
- bile acid conjugation and fat digestion;
- reproduction and normal fetal development;
- nervous-system and cell-membrane function.
Unlike most mammals, cats use taurine when conjugating bile acids and lose some through the digestive tract. Their ability to synthesize replacement taurine is limited. A dependable dietary supply is therefore essential throughout life.
The Merck Veterinary Manual's small-animal nutrition guidance identifies taurine as an additional dietary amino-acid requirement for cats. It notes that deficiency can cause dilated cardiomyopathy and central retinal degeneration.
What can taurine deficiency do to a cat?
Taurine deficiency develops over time rather than after one stolen serving of dog food. The early signs may be subtle or absent while damage is developing.
Possible consequences include:
- dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart becomes enlarged and pumps poorly;
- retinal degeneration and irreversible vision loss;
- reproductive failure or abnormal kitten development;
- poor growth and other signs of nutritional disease.
A cat with heart disease may breathe rapidly, breathe with effort, become weak, collapse, hide, eat less, or lose interest in activity. Breathing difficulty in a cat is an emergency. Retinal damage may first appear as hesitation in dim light, bumping into objects, or dilated pupils, but vision loss can become permanent before an owner recognizes the pattern.
These signs have many possible causes. Do not diagnose taurine deficiency by symptoms or start random doses from the internet. A veterinarian may need a diet history, physical examination, heart imaging, eye examination, and blood testing, including taurine measurements in selected cases.
Where does dietary taurine come from?
Taurine occurs naturally in animal tissues. Heart, dark poultry meat, fish, and other muscle and organ tissues can contribute varying amounts. Plant ingredients contain little to no natural taurine.
Natural presence does not guarantee that an improvised recipe provides enough. Taurine concentration varies among tissues and species. Grinding, cooking, water loss, cooking liquid, storage, fiber, and the rest of the formula can affect the amount consumed or retained. Commercial cat foods account for processing and ingredient effects when they are formulated and verified.
Synthetic taurine used in complete cat food is nutritionally useful; "synthetic" does not make it inferior. It allows a formulator to deliver a consistent amount despite natural ingredient variation.

Dogs and taurine: a more nuanced picture
Most dogs can synthesize taurine, so nutritional standards do not treat taurine as universally essential for every healthy dog in the same way they do for cats. However, "dogs make their own taurine" is not the whole story.
Some dogs with certain breeds, health conditions, low availability of precursor amino acids, unusual diets, or other dietary factors can have low taurine status. Taurine-responsive dilated cardiomyopathy has been identified in some dogs. This is a veterinary diagnosis, not a reason to supplement every dog preventively.
If a veterinarian suspects diet-associated heart disease, the evaluation may include the full diet and treat history, cardiac testing, and plasma or whole-blood taurine measurement. Changing the diet or adding taurine without veterinary direction can delay a proper diagnosis and does not address every possible cause of heart disease.
Cats have other special nutrient needs
Taurine is the best-known difference, but it is not the only one.
Preformed vitamin A
Dogs can convert beta-carotene from plant ingredients into active vitamin A more effectively than cats. Cats require preformed vitamin A, naturally found in animal tissues and supplied in correctly formulated cat foods.
More vitamin A is not necessarily safer. Large, repeated servings of liver can cause excessive intake and vitamin A toxicity. The solution is a complete formula, not unlimited organ meat.
Arachidonic acid
Cats require dietary arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid found in animal fats and tissues. Dogs can usually synthesize it from linoleic acid. A feline diet must deliberately supply it.
Arginine
Arginine is essential for both dogs and cats, but cats are particularly vulnerable to deficiency. A single severely arginine-deficient meal can interfere with ammonia handling and cause serious illness. This is another reason not to experiment with restrictive or poorly formulated feline diets.
Protein and amino acids
Cats maintain high activity in metabolic pathways that use amino acids for energy. They generally require more dietary protein than dogs relative to calorie intake, as well as adequate amounts and balance of specific amino acids.
High protein is not automatically appropriate for every cat. Kidney disease, liver disease, urinary conditions, food intolerance, and other medical issues may require an individually selected diet. "Cats need protein" should not be turned into a universal maximum-protein rule.
Niacin and other vitamins
Cats have limited ability to make niacin from tryptophan and have higher requirements for some B vitamins than dogs. A complete feline diet accounts for these differences together rather than treating each nutrient as an isolated supplement.
Why dog food cannot be a cat's regular diet
The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that dog foods may be lower in protein, may not assure adequate taurine, and may not contain sufficient preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid, and other nutrients required by cats.
A healthy cat stealing a few bites from a dog's bowl is usually not a poisoning emergency. The concern is repeated or exclusive feeding. Nutritional deficiency can develop quietly, and the cat may appear normal until the effects are advanced.
Prevent routine stealing by feeding pets separately, picking bowls up after meals, or using species-selective feeders when needed. Check that the cat is actually eating its own complete food, especially in a multi-pet home where one animal guards bowls or eats faster.
Can dogs eat cat food?
A small accidental amount of cat food is usually not toxic to a healthy dog. However, cat food is often more energy-dense and may be higher in fat and protein than the dog's usual food. Regular access can contribute to excess calorie intake, digestive upset, or difficulty managing conditions such as pancreatitis.
Cat food also is not formulated to match canine nutrient requirements and feeding patterns. Each pet should have a complete diet labeled for the correct species and life stage.
Vegetarian and vegan diets require special caution
Cats cannot become herbivores through preference or training. A feline diet that excludes animal ingredients would require precise addition of taurine, arachidonic acid, preformed vitamin A, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, plus evidence that the finished product remains nutritionally adequate and bioavailable.
This is not a safe do-it-yourself project. Ingredient philosophy does not change feline metabolism. Owners considering a nontraditional diet should discuss the full nutritional and welfare implications with a veterinarian and a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.
Dogs have greater ingredient flexibility, but a vegetarian or vegan canine diet is not automatically complete. It still requires professional formulation, quality control, appropriate amino-acid balance, digestibility, and monitoring.
Choose food by nutritional adequacy, not the front label
For either species, look for a nutritional adequacy statement showing that the food is complete and balanced for the correct life stage. "Chicken recipe," "high meat," "ancestral," "natural," and "premium" are marketing descriptions, not proof of nutritional completeness.
Confirm:
- the food is specifically labeled for cats or dogs;
- it is complete and balanced rather than complementary or for intermittent feeding;
- the life stage matches growth, adult maintenance, reproduction, or another intended use;
- the manufacturer can explain who formulated the diet and how nutrient adequacy and quality are verified;
- feeding amounts are adjusted to the individual pet's body condition and activity.

Home-cooked diets must be species-specific
A homemade recipe designed for a dog must not be fed to a cat, and a generic "pet food" recipe is a warning sign. The formulator needs to account for the species, life stage, body condition, health, ingredients, cooking method, supplements, and exact quantities.
Cats are especially vulnerable to casual substitutions. Leaving out a supplement, changing the meat, discarding or retaining cooking liquid, or using a different cooking method can alter taurine and other nutrient levels. Follow the recipe precisely and maintain the recommended veterinary monitoring.
Plain meat or fish can be used as an occasional treat for many healthy pets, but extras should remain a small part of the diet so they do not displace complete food. Avoid onion, garlic, excessive salt, sauces, cooked bones, and raw animal products.
The practical takeaway
Cats are obligate carnivores with dietary requirements that dogs do not share. Taurine is essential for feline heart, eye, reproductive, and digestive function.
